Apply for Job Seekers Allowance in advance?

I'v recently finished college and I'm going to need to apply for JSA. The only problem is that I'm not entitled to it for another week or two. Before I spend an hour waiting on the phone, does anybody know if I can apply for it in advance so that I can get my claim started straight away when I am entitled or will I need to ring up on the day? Thanks
